What makes a good couple in a novel?

I am writing a sci-fi fantasy novel not a romance novel so I want the couple to be more of a cute side story and not a full on 'I'm so in love with you' type of thing. They don't exactly kiss or anything but at the end they nervously hold hands and I thought it would be a cute ending. They're both about 30 so they aren't exactly teens but they're rather antisocial and shy even though the male can come off as an asshole due to the fact he hasn't got good people skills and the woman is pretty ignorant and is definitely more of an introverted person as she tends to come across as bitchy even though she has no idea that what she's saying is offencive to others. They get along well because they're to-the-point people and not the type of couple that spend all their time flirting with each other, even though they never actually ask each other out. They don't take offence too much themselves so they tend to be very patient and tolerant with each other.

Is this a couple that could work?
