Returning a purchase to shop?

I bought something online in john lewis, i live in n.ireland so to return i would have to post it back. The item is a toy i know smyths sell, do you think its possible to tell smyths i bought it, lost the reciept and looking an exchange for something else? Would the barcode still scan ok??

    Fraud and of course they will find out. They are not stupid and might think you have stolen it as you have no receipt.
