    50 miles of freezing ocean choked with giant blocks of constantly shifting ice, yes, located off the back end of one of the most vast and inhospitable regions of the earth. It's not that surprising

    Because for most of Russian history Russia was smaller. They had yet to advance so far into the wilderness.

    Example in the 1600's Russia was only half the size it is today.
