For Straight Talk montly service, it states "unlimited mobile web access." What exactly does this mean?

I have only had a dumb phone (talk and text) so far. I want a smart phone that will allow me to access the internet (web searches, check email, update facebook, and such things.) Is mobile web access the same as wifi or what?

If I can only make use of such features while connected to wifi (which I only have at home and in a few public areas), I wonder if a smart phone and service with a data/mobile web plan will even be beneficial. I already have a laptop at home. I want to be "connected" while on the go.

Please don't be rude. I know that I'm ignorant when it comes to cell phone (and data) service. I thank you for nice helpful answers.

That's a great question and a lot of people ask it. I've worked in the industry for over ten years now and I still hear it almost daily. So mobile web access isn't the same as an internet connection on the phone. Basically the easiest way to think of mobile web access/mobile browser is to think of it as sort of a mini browser for standard cell phones. Smartphones require a full browser or data package to access the internet anywhere. When you're connecting to wifi you're in an area that's got internet service and they're allowing people to access it wirelessly. Starbucks for example provides free wifi service to customers so this means that people can go there and go online with their smartphones, tablets and laptops.

For what you want to do I'd suggest perhaps going with a small data add on for a smartphone. This way you can go online anywhere that you've got service and won't need to find a spot with wifi. Set your smartphone to automatically switch over to wifi whenever possible to save your data allowance and you're set. Just don't watch video clips or Netflix unless you are using wifi or you'll go over your data and get a big bill.

    Straight Talk Mobile Web Access

Mobile web access is cell phone data. Which means you can use the internet without wifi as long as you have signal for internet.

Straight talk is unlimited but when you get to 3 GB your connection gets really slow.
