Is the police today really militarized?
With all the riots going on in Missouri, all I see is cops with amored cars and dressed in swat gear. I do recall a while back, where the police would have gas masks and BAYONETS, and wade in to the crowd, stabbing ANYONE who couldn't get away. People seem to forget 'the good old days', where half of the riot force would shoot in to the air and the other half would shoot in to the crowd. I would think today we are better off just seeing the cops standing around all geared up, and not actually going 'old school' on rioting scumbags.

I have no problem seeing police respond to violent protests in full riot gear and with bigger than normal armament. I've seen too often when the police were outgunned and got injured.
If your child or grandchild was working at a grocery store as hundreds of angry protesters marched down the street, looting and burning stores, would you want to see the police arrive in cotton shirts with 9mm on their hips or in riot gear with big guns? The police are all that stands between the life of your loved one and the violent mob. I vote for the latter - get militarized.

Technological innovations are improving the police today. So they are being militarized and getting more advanced in what they do.

No, the police is paramilitary; always has been, and will always be the case.
But they are not military for a good reason; because they don't have access to high calibre military hardware as in the case of the armed services.

American police have always been militarised.
Police in the US think an "appropriate" response to an unarmed suicidal man threatening to jump off a roof is to call half the force in, approach him with pistols and shotguns drawn and then tase him a dozen times into compliance once they catch him.

That would be the Ferguson's version of '89 Tienanmen Massacre.

Luke 6:42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou seest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Hypocrite, cast out the beam out of thine own eye first, and then shalt thou see perfectly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
