What engineering major should I take?

I want to be an automtive engineer. Problem is, I've heard it's very hard to find work, and since I live in California, I'm guessing it's going to be harder. Should I just major in Mechanical Engineering, and then leave it at that? Since I live in the mojave desert (where Northdrop Grumman is) aersopace is huge here. Can I still find work? I'll also took 4 years of STEM classes (IED, POE, etc). Can that increase my chances? Thanks.

I could be wrong, but isn't Tesla in or near California?

It is true that most automotive engineering jobs in the U.S. are located in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, & Illinois. Or you can go to Mexico or Canada for more automotive facilities.

It would be very hard finding a job in the automotive field in California, where it is too expensive for a car manufacturer to open a facility there.

If Aerospace is huge there, study aerospace engineering. California is known for being the most environmentally friendly state with the most hydrogen fuel stations, electric car charging stations, and natual gas stations for cars like the Honda FXC, Honda Fit EV, Honda Civic Nat. gas, Tesla Model S, Nissan Lead, and BMW i3. I would assume there are plenty of environmental engineering jobs in the area related to renewable energies, solar power, and more.
