Ammonia levels in fish less cycling not going away?

I started cycling one of my fish tanks almost three weeks ago using the fish less cycle. I've been adding food nearly daily to cycle it. About two weeks ago, I saw the ammonia spike to about 4ppm and for the last two weeks, it's been bouncing between .25 and 2ppm but hasn't hit zero yet. How much longer can I expect it to take?

Three weeks should be considered the minimum time to grow the first colonies of nitrifying bacteria (nitrosomonas) the next colony, the nitrobacter group cannot begin growing until the first colony is producing lots of nitrite for them to feed on. The second colony will then also require a minimum of three weeks to reach a workable level. It sounds as if your cycle is proceeding normally. Perhaps it might help to cut back on the feeding to every three days.

the food is breaking down an causing bacteria to build up, hence the ammonia levels are going up. Easier to cycle a tank with a feeder goldfish or danio.
