How can I change my last name legally?
Where do I even start? The reason I want to change it is because my last name comes form my father and hasn't been living with us for 5 years. My mother became a single mother and now I finished school and getting ready for college. So can someone tell me where to go? How much does it cost? I basically want my mother last name because she has always been there for me.

Look up "permanent change of name minor" and the county you live in. that should get you the section of the local courthouse website with directions on how to file for a name change.
Sometimes it costs more to do it before you are 18, but there is also another form to fill out so that you can get the fees waived.
Your mom would have to fill them out for you if you are under 18, but it is certainly possible to have it done- and that will be how.
Talk about this with Mom - this may or may not be what you want to do. You may change your mind later on.

You file the proper paperwork, go to court, and have a judge sign off on it. What that paperwork is and the exact procedure varies from state to state, so consult with a lawyer where you live for more information.
