can you out run a tornado ?

I think it is stupid to hide under a highway overpass or also called a bridge it is proven to create a fast flow of air racing through it and helps little and can possibly worsen the situation how far must the twister be to know you can out run it without abandoning your car ?

Maybe, Maybe not. Tornado's travel at different speed, different directions, and can change directions without notice. Generally they travel from the southwest to the northeast, but I've seen them travel from the northwest to southeast, and other directions to include north, east, south, and any combination. For example a tornado traveling towards the northeast can change and go almost straight north. Also keep in mind in a car you have to travel the roads, while the tornado does not. If you leave and get a head start you can probably outrun it in a car. But if you trying to leave when it is 1/4 mile away you might run into problems.

I am from Kansas & Oklahoma a place they call tornado alley. People who live there live in constant fear of tornados. If the roadway is clear then yes you could actually out run the tornado, I awoke around midnight one night in 1970 oklahoma city. A tornado touched down on the street to the south, then took out our back fence, put a section of fence through my dads windshield. Removed my basketball goal and the rim was found across the street of a 2 story houses backyard the next day. A tennis ball could not fit through the hoop. Then the tornado struck the street to the north completely removing the roofs and rafters of 3 one story houses. The photo is of the house I grew up in, taken in 1970 .I know the basketball goal is there so taken before the tornado

It's depends on the mass of the tornado, distance between you to the tornado, also the speed it is traveling at.

Tornado have enough power to break down a large building in matter of seconds, so unless you are traveling in high speed car in the opposite direction to the tornado, you maybe able to make it out alive.

The question is more about the Mathematical Physics regards to tornado.

Trying to outrun a tornado is foolish. Why? Because tornadoes do not use follow roads and have to slow down to make a turn, etc.

    Get underground and stay there!

Source(s): Live in Oklahoma and have seen more tornadoes then I care to remember, including the rope tornado that went 300 feet right over my head.

Yes and no. Best not to try.

It is difficult not to stay in your car even tho it can be tossed around or taken flying. Some say lay flat in a ditch, but if it can suck up a car, seems it could suck up you. Best to be in a hole in the ground with a SUPER STRONG door, which also can get sucked away if weak.

If it is going slow enough. You can outrun anything, as long as you are faster.

    I highly doubt it
