Look up Spread the Word of Newer Grunge Bands. They will show you there are hundreds of true grunge bands around the world, so to say grunge is dead is incorrect. Check around your school and advertise with flyers and on facebook or twitter. You'll find someone that will join.
I also agree with Chronset Diabetes though, don't try to be a Nirvana clone or something like that. Try bringing something new to the table.

If you like Avril Lavigne, you probably like NSync, Backstreet Boys, California Sunshine, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Justin Bieber, too!

Nu-metal is no better. Try just jamming with others and see what comes out, without specifically trying to sound like anything.

Grunge is a terrible genre, start a nu-metal group.. If you want to sound like a dying cow like Nirvana you can start a grunge band.
