Do moving vans charge by weight? I heard they do. That would mean moving a box of books on a van would cost as much as furniture.?

Update:

It would also mean that it might be more cost effective to sell old furniture and buy second hand furniture on the other end. How does one decide what to pay to move and what to get rid of? If you end up just moving a few things, would it cost more per pound. I can see that happening. They're not likely to want to take a large van with just a few pieces of furniture in it.

Yes, they weigh the van after they load it and that helps determine the cost. There are some things that have a lot of weight and little monetary value that you might want to get rid of.
