A new drive appeared on my computer during a malware scan.?

I received a fake email from someone posing as Delta airlines. I opened the email, but NOT the attachment. (I had helped a family member book and pay for a flight the other day, so thought it was legit until I opened it.) After deleting the email, I started Virus and Malware scans. Malwarebytes asked if I want to scan drives C, E, or Y. I only have C and E drives, never seen Y before and it was never listed on Malwarebytes before. I do not have any other drives or media plugged in to account for the extra drive. I tried searching for a Y drive on my computer and none was found. Anyone know what this could be and if it could be related to a virus or malware?

Odds are that it is a system drive. Windows will create a small (hidden) drive that contains files it needs to boot the computer and a copy of the Windows install and system files. Those are what it uses to repair your computer if it has problems loading Windows.

Whateer infected your computer may have tried to access that drive, and it doing so removed some of the properties that normally kept it hidden from you (and the virus scanner.)

One way to tell what is there is to use the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer mangement > Disk management. That will allow you to see all the partitions on your hard drive(s) including hidden ones. If you have any hidden drives out there, you can assignment them a letter so that you can open and look at them. However do NOT delete or change anything on them or try to save any new files on them. You could mess up the boot process.

Run the virus scan, and if the Y drive really is something created by the infection, the scan should clear it. But i have never heard of or seen a virus that creates a new partition/drive on the computer. It is most likely a system drive that up until now was hidden from your view.
