Does the name Maria mean Mary in Spanish?

Maria is the Spanish, Italian and Portuguese spelling for the English name, Mary.

The Hebrew Miriam became Mariam in Latin, and then, because feminine words in -am in Latin usually have that ending only in the accusative case, it got changed into Maria in the nominative case, which is the form it retains in Portugese and Italian. It is María in Spanish but becomes Marie in French, which like many French words in -ie changed this to -y in English around the 16th century, whence Mary. The English pet form was Molly, which is often changed to Polly, or shortened to Moll or Poll.
As this is the name of the Blessed Virgin, the name is often extended to Spanish to include one of her attributes: María de los Dolores (Our Lady of the Sorrows) which is shortened to Dolores or Lola or Lolita, María de las Mercedes (Our Lady of Mercy) becomes just Mercedes, etc., etc.

Yes. It is the same. It is Marie in french.
( I have to put more than just yes, because it is a breach of the Yahoo guidelines just to say yes, and I have been reported a few times for saying yes to a question that requires a yes or no answer. Yahoo Answers has some ridiculous rules).
