Can all Remington 870 shotguns have scopes put on them?
I live on an island that only allows bow/shotgun hunting. I have shot 870's a fair amount, like them and they fit my budget. I know some people put scopes on them and that is my intention as well, but I am unsure if all 870's are ready to have mounts/rails to put on them out of the box or if some models need to get tapped in order to have scopes attached to them?
The reason I ask is that I see a lot of used ones online with 28'' barrels ( I would swap the 28'' for either a 18'' or 20'') that I would assume are used primarily for bird and therefore unsure if they come out of the box ready for scopes...
Thanks in advance!

Not all Remington 870's are drilled and tapped, only some are, others must be taken to a gun smith to have receiver drilled out.
If I'm not mistaken, the 870 express sporting guns usually are not drilled and tapped, but the 870 express tactical guns usually are. You can check out Remington's website to browse thru the models.
If all else fails, buy local to be sure. Or ask the seller.

You typically see scopes on rifled slug barrels (which is recommended if you hunt deer where only shotguns are allowed). The barrels are cantilevered over the receiver. Here is one that includes a scope:

An 18" or 20" barrel is a security barrel and does not require (nor would it make sense in most situations) to mount a scope on it. Some do have sights, though, so they could be used with rifled slugs.

A scoped shotgun for bird hunting is a waste of time and money. The scope would limit your field of view to the point where it would be extremely difficult to track and shoot a moving (or flying) target. Save the scope for deer hunting with a slug gun. NOT for birds.

I would only recommend a scope for slug shooting...and that would be a low power one...( 1.5 - 4x ) They aren't sniper rifles.
Source(s): get a barrel and put a scope on it and use another (shorter ) barrel to play with. This Rossi Youth features a 22LR / 243 / 410 and 20 gauge....sorta covers a lot of bases....
