Is an ethernet connection noticeably faster than a wireless connection for console gaming?

I have a PS4 being delivered in a few days and I will be playing games online.

My friend told me I'm insane if I don't connect with an ethernet cable as opposed to wirelessly, for gaming.

I'm wondering if it makes enough of a difference. I have a fast internet connection (around 50MB download).

Update:

In case it helps, my router is very very close to where the PS4 is gonna be. Like 8 feet.

If you are only 8 feet from the router, that is a no-brainer.

Use an standard Ethernet patch cable. They are very inexpensive, and you can get one at a local store such as BestBuy or Walmart or from a online retailer such as Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&...

Wireless connections suck for gaming. All Wireless connections have losses. There is also increased overhead required for security that is needed on wireless connections.

For serious gaming, Ethernet is the way to go. Ping times (latency) can swing wildly when you encounter wireless interference, A direct Ethernet cable gives you a rock solid connection that is not affected by interference.

    Good Luck...

Your friend is right. An Ethernet connection will give you far better performance, both in bandwidth and latency (ping times) than Wi-Fi.

If you're going to game over Wi-Fi, you'll never get full use out of that Internet connection.

It really depends upon your internet connection speed and wireless speed. If you have a good WiFi connection much faster than your internet connection you would not notice any difference in speed tests. For example my WiFi is typically reported as 54 Mbps and my internet tests at ~5.1 Mbps whether wired or wireless. Although, it could make a difference if you have a very fast internet connection or multiple devices using wireless at the same time.

If you have a good wireless connection with your ps4 (above 90%) then it is hard to tell the difference between Ethernet cable and wireless.

Before i give you a definite answer:

-The PS4 does NOT support 5ghz wifi, only the N band at most (basically, the PS4s built in wifi chip isnt the newest wifi chip around)

-Ethernet always has a better ping/latency than wifi, due to wifis handshake protocols (basically, you get better ping if you use Ethernet)

-WiFi speeds depend on signal strength, which depend on distance from router

-802.11n 2,4ghz goes to 300mbps theortical max speed, in reality its somewhere from 30-100 depending on radios in area

basically: use Ethernet if you can, if you cant, wifi *might* have a noticeable difference

    Ethernet is GB's

    Wireless is MB's

If your gaming go wired its far faster.

A wired connection will deliver a more consistent connection. The bandwidth is dedicated betweeen you and and the router and wired connections are far less prone to interference.
