AP Chemistry solution problem?
Veterinarians use Donovan’s solution to treat skin diseases in animals. The solution is prepared by mixing 1.00 g of AsI3(s), 1.00 g of HgI2(s), and 0.900 g of NaHCO3(s) in enough water to make a total volume of 100.0 mL.
(a) Compute the total mass of iodine per liter of Donovan’s solution, in grams per liter.
(b) You need a lot of Donovan’s solution to treat an outbreak of rash in an elephant herd. You have plenty of mercury(II) iodide and sodium hydrogen carbonate, but the only arsenic(III) iodide you can find is 1.50 L of a 0.100 M aqueous solution. Explain how to prepare 3.50 L of Donovan’s solution starting with these materials.
For a) I got 13.9 g/L

(1.00 g AsI3) / (455.63501 g AsI3/mol) x (3 mol I / 1 mol AsI3) x (126.904 g I/mol) = 0.83556 g I / 100.0 mL from AsI3
(1.00 g HgI2) / (454.3989 g HgI2/mol) x (2 mol I / 1 mol HgI2) x (126.904 g I/mol) = 0.55856 g I / 100.0 mL from HgI2
(0.83556 g + 0.55856 g) = 1.39412 g I / 100.0 mL total
So in 1 L there would be 10 times as much: 13.9 g/L I
So you are correct.
(3.50 L) x (10.00 g AsI3/L) / (455.63501 g AsI3/mol) / (0.100 mol/L) = 0.768 L = 758 mL
So take 758 mL of the AsI3 solution and add to it 35 times the masses of HgI2 and NaHCO3 specified in the original recipe. Then dilute the mixture to exactly 3.50 L with water.
