I'm sure this is an unpopular point of view. But first let me say I am not a football fan so could care less about that aspect, but I don't think an athlete has to be a role model, and don't think he should be banned over something that happened in his personal life. Yes, hitting your woman is a terrible thing and I don't condone it, but it has nothing to do with football. Just another example of an organization caving because of media/public pressure. In other words, more worried about sponsors than the game they claim to love.

Was this a one time thing (being hit) or is it a recurring thing? Not saying it's right either way, but if this is the first time it's happened, then maybe that's why she is willing to stand by him. I honestly have not been keeping up with this story so I can't say.

Or maybe she likes to be treated bad. Who can say.

Still, you don't just punch your significant other (unless it's in self defense).

Surely you know that the majority of domestic abusers are white men. Also the least likely to report abuse are the partners of those white men.

The majority of abusers will do two things. The first is to tell the victim that if they didn't A) criticize, or B) flirt with other men or C) anything that comes to mind -- then the abuser wouldn't "have to hit them". The abuser tries to make the victim think it is the victim's fault. Often, as with Janay, that works.

Or...the abuser will apologise and promise never to abuse again. Of course they do abuse again and it usually gets worse over time. The abuser makes the victim feel like that they should forgive the abuser if "they really love them". Of course, love is not abuse but often this works as it did with Janay.

The most revealing thing she said was that she and her husband would show the world what "true love" is. She has no idea how ridiculous and pitiful that sounded. I'd bet she grew up in a house with abuse so it's a dangerously familiar place for her. If she accepts how unfair and awful it is, then that means her father didn't really love her mother and her new husband doesn't really love her.

He could, of course, but he would be entering therapy on his own and working for months, if not years, to change his behavior if that were true. Let's see if he mans up or continues as a woman beating wimp.

The promise of money will overcome a lot of discomfort. Popular ball player = good money. Sorry but I'm cynical

She is being used by the media. She wants everyone to just leave her alone and they refuse. No one can maker her leave her husband except for her.

No, this is something very different than voluntary BDSM relationships.

Domestic Violence starts with a psychological attack against the victim's self esteem and sense of reality, to the point that they actually believe they deserve the abuse and that their attacker is just misunderstood and needing love and understanding. That is why it is so common for an abused domestic partner to defend their abuser against those who would chastise him/her for the abuse. That is also why it is so difficult to break the cycle of domestic abuse and why law enforcement tends to treat DV very differently than other forms of abuse and assault.

This goes for both genders and sometimes it's even harder to break an abuse cycle that involves a female perp and a male victim. Society is a whole lot less sympathetic to abused husbands.
