Christians, did your pastor tell you that Lucifer is Satan, because that certainly isn't in the bible?

Is Lucifer a name that the Bible uses for Satan?

The name Lucifer occurs once in the Scriptures and only in some versions of the Bible. For example, the King James Version renders Isaiah 14:12: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”

The Hebrew word translated “Lucifer” means “shining one.” The Septuagint uses the Greek word that means “bringer of dawn.”

Hence, some translations render the original Hebrew “morning star” or “Daystar.” But Jerome’s Latin Vulgate uses “Lucifer”, and this accounts for the appearance of that term in various versions of the Bible.

    Who is this Lucifer?

The expression “shining one,” or “Lucifer,” is found in what Isaiah prophetically commanded the Israelites to pronounce as a “proverbial saying against the king of Babylon.” Thus, it is part of a saying primarily directed at the Babylonian dynasty.

the description “shining one” is given to a man and not to a spirit creature is further seen by the statement: “Down to Sheol you will be brought.” Sheol is the common grave of mankind not a place occupied by Satan the Devil.

Moreover, those seeing Lucifer brought into this condition ask: “Is this the man that was agitating the earth?” Clearly, “Lucifer” refers to a human, not to a spirit creature.

No, since I don't have a pastor. I'm a former LDS Christian, so we don't have pastors, but rather Bishops who are in charge of the congregations. I'm currently atheist, however I still attend church.

Well, it's correct that it doesn't say specifically "Lucifer is Satan", however, it does describe Lucifer, which resembles the descriptions in the bible about Satan. See Isaiah 14:12. It's more or less an assumption I suppose.

    You are correct.

    Unfortunately, there is this:

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lucifer

That is: **culturally** and **linguistically** Lucifer is equated with Satan.

So: even though **it is certainly true** that the Bible identifies "Lucifer" as a long-dead king of Babylon and NOT as Satan, our culture **and our language** do equate the two.

Therefore, we should be very careful in explaining *why* we say that Lucifer is not Satan, because according to standard English (and many other European languages) Lucifer **is** Satan.

it really does depend on which translation you use. lucifer is mention in the old testament, and says How are you fallen from heaven... some people think the same verse is talking a mortal King. and i was confused for a moment when i noticed that lucifer is fallen from heaven. and in another verse it does say lucifer beccame Satan. satan is defined several different ways, enemy of God, enemy of righteousness, are the ones i use the most.

here is a modern vision of the devil found in doctrine and covenants: LDS scripture http://classic.scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/76

25 And this we saw also, and bear record, that an angel of God who was in authority in the presence of God, who rebelled against the Only Begotten Son whom the Father loved and who was in the bosom of the Father, was thrust down from the presence of God and the Son,

26 And was called Perdition, for the heavens wept over him—he was Lucifer, a son of the morning.

27 And we beheld, and lo, he is fallen! is fallen, even a son of the morning!

28 And while we were yet in the Spirit, the Lord commanded us that we should write the vision; for we beheld Satan, that old serpent, even the devil, who rebelled against God, and sought to take the kingdom of our God and his Christ—

29 Wherefore, he maketh awar with the saints of God, and encompasseth them round about.

so, you see? there is truth in the old story, and modern revelation is shown by vision and written down.

Lucifer was transformed into Satan or something different after he was defeated and cast out of heaven. He grabbed up the 1/3 of angels that rebelled with him and then G-D cast him down to earth.

    .

To have the Bible interpret itself, one verse comes to me =

Isaiah 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

There is only one verse that names Lucifer -

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

There are 56 references to Satan in the Bible, 37 of which are in the NT.

There are 19 references to "dragon" 13 of which are in Revelation.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" [1 Peter 5:8]

The church I attend uses the NRSV, which does not follow in the error of earlier translators proper-nouning "day star" into "Lucifer". So, no.

Maybe Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John had no idea about Lucifer.

No its not. Its in a extra-biblical text that Jewish people wrote around the same time as they were writing Genesis, and it kinda stuck.

Its not a tenant of the Christian faith, more of the Christian mythology, which although not truthful could be helpful.
