Why is my computer still slow?

I've owned my Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop for 2 years, with Windows 7. The entire computer is slow and freezing, not just internet browser; the screen will have a white/lighten filter over it. I think the issue might be with Windows Explorer or Windows itself. Here's everything I tried:

-Disk Cleanup reduced my hard drive from 89% free to 90% free (out of 451 GB)

-Disk Defrag runs weekly so it doesn't help

-I turned off unnecessary startups and services in msconfig

-avast! and malwarebytes removed any threats but that was over a week ago

This all above reduced my memory usage from 2.72 GB to 1.69 GB, and still no luck. So maybe the issue is with my CPU usage? But task manager freezes and I can never see it going above 50%. Which is hard for me to believe because this freezing will happen when I barely turn on the laptop (with only essential and antivirus startups), I usually only have 2 tabs open at once, and no other programs open. Maybe a single youtube video or facebook is all it takes for my entire laptop to freeze.

My computer also experiences a lot of improper shutdowns (because it freezes to the extent I have no other option, or because the 20 minute lifespan battery gets unplugged without my noticing)... so I'm wondering if that caused it.

Update:

I've read through all the answers, and will take a few days trying out the multiple solutions before awarding best answer.

Ehh, I would honestly just go for a new computer if it's really getting that bad, but if you can actually do some stuff with it while it still works, you might want to keep trying task manager and see what in the world is taking up that much memory usage. usually when a computer runs slow it's due to some kind of program leeching your ram. Could be some kind of virus, or just a bunch of bloating software you don't need because even 1.69 gigs is pretty high. I always try to get my usage under one gigabyte when I'm not running anything

Slow and freeze do not necessarily mean malware. A computer can be slow becuase there are too many things running on it. All of these may be nominally "legitimate". For example you can have your video graphics; your antivirus; java and several dozen other programs all running and routinely trying to check for updates. None of these are malware but the sum of them will slow down your PC to a crawl. A freeze can happen if these overload your PC or if there is a bug.

But you may be also having malware. To check for that your best bet is to get a "stand alone" virus checking disk such as Kaspersky. The benefit is that you do not need to install it on your PC and it is free. In other word you do NOT have to remove or replace your existing antivirus or any other programs. You boot your machine from the disk and let it scan your drives.

This is a good method because none of the programs normally on your PC get to run. So if there is a virus then it will most likely remain inactive and unable to mess with the antivirus. When it is done then you can decide whether you want to change what is on your PC or not.

Try giving windows again and install antivirus norton 360 is best after you have installed the antivirus give full scan and install tune-up utilities and scan for computer problem if it is solved then you are done but if it didn't you just have to buy go to a computer shop and tell about your computer they might change your hardware if it is fixed then it is good if not there is nothing to do but to buy a new computer.

It could be because your computer is overloaded with too many programmes and applications. When your computer becomes slower than before, you need to pay attention because 90% of slow computers are affected by various system errors. They firstly become slow, and then freeze up now and then. One day they crash all of sudden.

The best way to get rid of slow pc performance it to optimize your system with system optimizer which will do all scanning and fixing of errors.
