Not to dodge your question but putting on '96-98 Vortec head (062 and 906 casting) is a solid 50 HP gain over ANY smog head from the 70's. Especially 882 heads (which is more than likely what was original for your '76 and is the absolute poorest flowing 4 inch bore head GM ever made)

I'd put vortec heads on there without any thought or reservation.

Then, work the Quadrajet carb over and lose the SMOG cam. You'll have something that will get quite a bit better mileage along with some BIG power and drive ability gains and especially if you put the right cam in it.

Source(s): Camshaft design/manufacture, full competition race engine bldg/dvlpmnt, internal component failure analysis, Carb blueprinting, drivability/MPG/durability expert, chem analysis of fuel, super-tuner. I'll help/advise you, make/sell you cams. I WON't pick a competitors cam for you or share cam specs upfront with shoppers, so don't ask. I get MANY emails from Y.A. A few buyers from here, even. I'll GLADLY answer a private email or two, but please don't slam me with endless emails/questions.

Try Google. Its all about valve size, chamber size and port size.
