If you understand girls it's not weird. I feel like some authosr pull it of surprisingly well.
Good examples include...
John Green's protagonist, Hazel, from The Fault in Our Stars.
And Rick Yancey's, Cassie, from The 5th Wave.
The characters are realistic and balanced, they wrote the girls like real people capable of thinking. Which is better than some female writers do for their female protagantists.

The fault in our stars is written by a man and from the pov of a teen girl. I am a woman yet I write from the pov of teen boys. J.K.Rowling wrote Harry Potter. You don't have to write from your gender's pov.
