When our leaders go on television and say "this has nothing to do with Islam", are they removing Muslims of the need to change Islam?

Not all Muslims are terrorists, but most terrorists are Muslims (or at least, they claim to be) and they justify their terror in the name of Islam. If this is not in keeping with the tenets of Islam, then we need more Muslims to condemn this subversion of their religion and remove the religious "cover" that these terrorists seem to enjoy. It's not really the job nor place of non-Islamic western leaders to say this or that group are or are not Islamic--it's up to the Islamic world to own or disown these groups and their actions. Silence is not an option (at least, not a good one).

You need to be careful with the terms you use, groups like ISIS come from the Wahabi sect. of Sunni Islam, they represent a minority of the Islamic world. However, countries such as Saudi Arabia support these groups by giving arms. Throughout the years, these groups seem to have separated themselves from Saudi Arabia and now pose a risk to the whole world. The only way to eliminate this form of extremism is to stop the radicalisation of young people.

Since, lets say the year 2000, lets estimate around 4,000 Americans have been killed by people using islam as a reason to kill Americans.

How many Muslims have been killed by Americans since that day? Do you think its more or less than 4,000 ?

perhaps, if you're worried about Americans safety then you should deal with your gun crime and horrific homicide rate.

Also, using a small poll in a relatively backward part of the wolrd, like Egypt doesn't prove thats true of western muslims.

Islam does not preach to go out and murder people anymore than Christianity or Judaism does. The vast majority of Muslims get this. Islam doesn't need to change. We just need to stop the evil people who pervert Islam to justify their own villainy.
