How do I accept having to put my dog to sleep?

I found out this afternoon that my beautiful baby girl has kidney failure. She's 15.5 years old and my first Jack Russell. I know she has had a good long life and I have loved her dearly. I have to call the vet in the morning to make the appointment but plan to spend most of the morning with my baby. I am so upset. She has stopped eating and I don't want her to suffer any more. I know it's the right thing to do but it's tearing my heart out. For anyone that's been through this, how did you spend your time with your beloved dog before saying goodbye? I would like to take my baby for a slow walk at her favorite place and then maybe just cuddle with her. I'm just feeling very lost right now.

I always made this decision pretty much when I was ready to take mine straight to my vet - there was no delaying and to be honest, I don't know how I'd spend the final days/hours with mine. Try to be as 'normal' as you can under the circumstances because you will pass on your understandable and perfectly normal feelings to your dog.

Just know you will be giving your old girl the biggest gift any loving owner can - giving her peace. Quite often this is the first experience of losing someone dear to us that most people experience and it hurts. It's rotten for sure, but actually if my reaction is anything to go by, once the decision is made, and done, you will probably start to feel 'better'

My sympathies. She has a good long life so well done for that.

I shouldn't have read your question because its making me tear up.

My dog is 12 and one day may go through the same thing. I don't know what I would do, but it WOULD be heartbreaking. I would probably take him for a good walk (his favorite activity), and then just sit with him and cry my eyes out.

Sorry that it doesn't answer your question very well.

Know that she lived a good, long life and that she loves you so much. It's very hard to let go of a pet. Unfortunately, there comes a point in time where we all have to go. Putting your dog to sleep now will ensure that she dies peacefully without any pain. And vets wouldn't suggest putting a pet down regardless of the age if it wasn't the last resort.

I'm so sorry! I've been through it as well. Just spend your last hours with her. Doing things with her that you couldn't otherwise do. After she's peacefully passed give it about a week and get another puppy... I know it'll never replace you baby but it does help keep your mind off of it all..

Again my sympathies go out to you and your baby!

Eyes are now welling up, sorry I'm not good at condolences, I think V2 said it best (nothing wrong with other comments either), just remember the good times, I've been through this with many pets and it doesn't get any easier, ever.
