Have your fuel filter changed at least once per year till the fuel tank is replaced. When a new one has been installed change the fuel filter every 30,000 miles.

If it's got a lot of rust in it, the rust particles will quickly clog any filter. Not knowing what kind of car it is: a problem with old cars with mechanical fuel pumps and carburetors ,.......a much bigger are more expensive problem with newer cars using electric fuel pumps and fuel injection.

You want it fixed ASAP . . . may not require a new tank - tank can be removed, cleaned and inside sealed with coating.

As a mechanic I'd advise you to get the tank replaced immediately but it isn't cheap. In the meantime I'd take the tank out (after draining it) and flush out all the rust
