If you truly love him, be with him, if not, move on. There are "plenty of fish in the sea". He may not be stable because he may be scared of being stable. Almost everyone is scared of their fleeting youth. If you do decide to stay with him, show him how much you care, support him until his arm gets better. If he is still addicted to pain pills, or there is another problem, possibly stage an intervention. You show a little doubt, so I would say move on, but I may be wrong, and you may truly love him. If I am wrong, then just stay with him. Decide if he is treating you the way you want to be treated, if he is someone you can trust, and if he is the one you find yourself with. Even if you eventually decide that he is not, it may help him if you stay his friend, because he sounds depressed, and you may be able to help him if anything gets worse.
