To all those who have done life drawing?

Did you find it awkward having a nude model in front you and having to draw he/she when you first did life drawing?

I was nervous the first time (back in 1990). I was 17 years old and very nervous. However when the time came, the lady walked in with a dressing down simply took it off, sat down on a chair and we started drawing .... no sniggering from an immature 17 year old.

I hate life drawing, I find it immensely boring, however out of a 60 (or so) class of students, I came second highest (according to my tutor). He was astonished when I told him how much I hated life-drawing.

This is my life-drawing from my University days - 2005 -2009

Good luck, I wouldn't wish life-drawing on my worst enemy :(

I was actually 36 the first time and I'd certainly seen nekkid people, so I jumped right into the phase where I said "I can't draw THIS. It's SO HARD" and I've never left though after almost a quarter of a century I still do it occasionally. Most of my friends who started younger and still do it haven't left that phase either. Believe me, though, it will get you out of your nervousness with nekkid people REAL fast so just surrender to it -- but draw anyhow. Do as well as you can and be prepared if you don't like the results.

The very first time I did a little, because I didn't want to make them feel uncomfortable by staring at them and whatnot. But once you're drawing (esp. if they're 30 second or 1 minute sketches) you really don't have the time to think about it.

It was great for me, too, because our model was also an artist. So she understood that we had to stare and measure and etc.

I have an artist friend who said she also hated life drawing, cos most of their models were these old or homely looking guys or old ladies. She really hated going to class till one day this good looking fit guy shows up to model for them, then after that she began to like it a bit more. Lol, go figure.

You might be nervous the first 2 minutes but once you start drawing you forget the person is nude and are focusing on lines, contours, shading, etc
