Delete anything you don't need.
Copy anything that could be archived to external media, such as DVDs. Get yourself an external drive, copy files over to that.
Upgrade your hard drive. A 500gb hard drive can be had for $30 or $40, a 1TB for $10 or $15 more. Put it in an external drive caddy and then clone the existing drive to the new one, then swap them, installing the new one in your laptop.

Try and use all of the disk utilities first, defrag etc. Clean up old files and delete old updates, as well as clearing out your caches.
