Why do Native Americans complain about New Age portrayals yet at Pow Wows the booths are clearly full of it?

Update:

Are they restricted by rules on who they can refuse? Is it a matter of money?

Why the contradiction?

Update 2:

Sure, Ann - everything from black felt pictures to selling magic charms, to a huge increase in cheap trinkets. It's almost funny - it's like they have hidden much of the actual valued crafts and put out the "beads" for the White Man and others to buy. Talk about a switch in cultural values! As funny is how much White people and others buy it.

Wouldn't part of being taken seriously be not allowing such individuals to get booths?

Or is it part of the culture to sell such things to Non-Natives?

Update 3:

At the pow-wow proper the way they talked it was clear they took the costumes and dances VERY seriously, in contrast to what I saw being sold in the booths.

Why the difference?

There are beautiful things made by Native Americans that could have been sold (and I saw some, but much was cheap trinkets, even commercial stuff, plastic, etc.).

Please explain what you mean by the term "New Age portrayals". Do you mean non-Native Americans dressing up with Native American totems, trinkets and garb?

Native Americans do not want non-Native Americans to play games dressing up in Native American garb. It is inauthentic and insulting to their heritage. Some things are revered and only to be worn by those deserving the honor.

Because that's the kind of crap the tourists want to buy. dreamcatchers, little amulet pouches, cheap trinkets...that's what they are willing to pay for, that's what sells, so that's what they get.

Why does it matter? They can do as they please how about you ask them instead of being close-minded Your so called complainin to them can mean something entirely different to you.
