Would it be offensive to wear a hijab if you are not Muslim?

What if you were wearing it to make a statement about cultural awareness, as support for freedom of religion, or just simply a fashion statement? Are any of those reasons inappropriate and would any Muslim be offended?

Also, are there certain places in the world, or situations (specific events) in which it would be considerate or mandatory to wear a hijab?

Any insight on this cultural trait would be great:) Thank you!

If you're visiting an Islamic country where hijabs are universally worn, you'd better wear one too.

I don't think it would be an appropriate way to make a "statement" of any kind. Muslims who know that you aren't Muslim would probably think you were wearing it as a costume (especially now that Halloween is near). Would you dress as a nun to show "freedom of religion" or go around in an Indian war bonnet to show "cultural awareness"?

If you are visiting a muslim country, you don't have much choice unless you want to be thrown in jail. To wear one in the western world is in my view totally stupid...whether muslim or not.
