What's a great gift idea for my friend who is going to a tough time in her life? Her birthday is coming up.

Oooooh!
Weeeeelll.... I always have trouble coming up with something for my friends. I try to think of something I like that I could share with them. One of my friends has a cozy little house and a cozy little room but she didn't have a fuzzy blanket :O fuzzy blankets are my life so I bought her one and she loves it <3
Hehe i dunno how helpful that example was... But here's another tip. I don't wanna just buy something for my friends I always thought that was annoying. I've wanted something from my friends that is about us, not about money. So, what I like to do sometimes is watch DIY videos on youtube and find something cute to make them. One of my friends loooooves horses and I found this cute video where you spray paint the lid of a glass jar and spray paint one of those plastic animal toys, then hot glue the animal to the lid and put chocolates inside the jar it looks really pretty!!!
Also, one of my friends loves peppermint so for Christmas I took plastic spoons, dipped them in melted chocolate so the spoon part was covered in chocolate, and then crushed up candycanes and put candycane pieces on the melting chocolate. Then you mix hot chocolate with the spoon and it melts in the drink and makes it all minty :O It was really cool and I bought us a pair of matching snowman mugs to drink from ^.^
Sorry, most of this is my rambling about my presents I've given. Anyways... I don't know this friend of yours, but if I were you I'd go on youtube for an hour or so and just watch DIY videos on room decor or something and get inspired. Find something that has a subject (coziness, peppermint, horses) they like that can speak through you (like how I enjoy fuzziness, hot chocolate, and chocolates lol). That's what I think gift giving is all about--not finding some toy or garb that has a fancy price tag and will satisfy the person for a few minutes. It's about finding some physical object that can symbolize you both and strengthen your bonds.

It would be easier to answer if you could list some of the things she likes :)
