Was the Constitution, in 1787, designed to curtail democracy?

    It was hastily designed to try to protect a crumbling republic. After the Revolution was over, there were two or three internal rebellions in the young U.S. - Shay's Rebellion was one and it was feared the young republic would crash and burn. The writers of the Constitution were trying to save the republic but it was not easy - they had 12 weeks to put a government together - that's less the length of a semester at college.

    There's a project for government class - put a real functioning government together in 12 weeks.

    Of course at that time it was a much more limited democracy than now - only people who owned 50 acres of land or more were allowed to vote and women citizens were not allowed to vote regardless of what they owned.
