Why won't my computer read SD cards from digital cameras?

The computer is a modern Asus all in one touch screen model. The card reader works fine with SD cards formatted and written to by other computers, but says cards from cameras need to be formatted.

The card reader is fine, and all the cards I've tried work perfectly well in other devices.

Could it be a software or security issue?

    Some cameras use a proprietary format, which the computer cannot recognize, when that is the case you can only format them in the camera.
