What can I use as a Pie Funnel Substitute?

Basically, I'm making a Chicken and Leek pie, never even heard of a Pie Funnel before, but the recipes says to use one so I'm just wondering if anyone knows what I can use for a substitute or is it not really a necessity?

I never use one. Just make some small holes in the top crust to let the steam out.

They're also called pie birds. They let the steam out of a pie while it's baking. You can roll up some tin foil into a tube and poke some holes in it to let the steam out.
