How to handle angry, negative co workers?

At two of my jobs co workers who physically sat next to my cubicle would openly say that they hate their jobs and how the manager was an a - hole and arrogant. That they hate the manager.. Now I want to play nice in the sand box even though I NEVER add negative comments. Instead I say how grateful they shou\ld be to be working at all.

Problem is that I may be "found guilty" by association. In future how do I get myself unavailable for such venting.

Whenever you hear your co-workers beginning their negative narrative, that would be a good time to get up from your cube and get some faxing/coping/filing done. Or, maybe a bathroom break. You are never going to change them, so don't try. Just don't be where they are so that others won't associate you with them.

next time they start their griping, tell them if they don't like it there, why don't they look for another job? - tell them you are tired of the negative talk all the time or tell them to go tell their managers to their face what they think about them
