Will a VOB. file play if burned onto a data disk for dvd? or can you only burn as a dvd to play, Thanks?

A bit more info, wanting to play a converted VOB. file on a divx compatable dvd player (plays avi, mpeg 2 files on a data disk etc), instead of burning the VOB file as a normal dvd disk (which takes up more space) can i burn the vob file on a data disk instead and will the dvd player be able to read it?, Thanks
