They do not operate like for profit businesses or generate profits over the long haul.

Same reason the make a wish foundation or red cross don't pay income taxes - because they are non-profit organizations.

The issue of tax deductions for churches isn't a question of whether or not the organization itself owes income taxes. The issue is whether or not they qualify as a charity under IRS section 503(c), which determines whether or not you and I can deduct the money we donate to the organization.

The government has decided so. They are not for profit (most are not). They do more for people than the government can. As long as they have the 501c3 status they cannot endorse politicians etc. Take away the status and churches will be widespread in politics

The law doesn't require them to, the are seen as non profits.

they are non profit organizations and exempt from paying income taxes

if they have any kind of business activity, ie. a book store etc., they will pay taxes on that income

I think they crossed over the line between church and state. Make them pay taxes so they can pay for their protests.

They are non-profit organizations. All monies go to expenses or charity works.
