My 2 month old won't nap?

He is a very happy baby most of the day. He loves spending time in his crib, but won't ever sleep during it. I am working on getting him on a routine, but we don't have one yet. He does sleep at night, but I have heard it is important that babies sleep three hours during the day also. How can I encourage him to nap during the day?

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

There is no one size fits all nap schedule for babies. My oldest still needed to nap after only an hour of awake time at that age (4-5 naps a day), while my youngest was already down to one nap a day. As long as baby is happy, not cranky through lack of sleep, let him nap as much as HE needs to nap.

I would however recommend not putting him in his crib except for sleep. It's a good thing he likes his crib, but it can bite you in the butt later on if he starts associating his crib with play instead of sleep. If you know baby's not going to sleep anyway, use a play pen or even just a blanket on the floor instead.

Congratulations, you have an alert baby.

Our now 19 year old had very little need for sleep as a baby. I'd mention it to his doctor of he truly never naps, but it might just be how he is.

Funny thing - our daughter is in college now, and loves naps!

When my little one was 2 months, she never napped either. And, now she almost six months and sleeps very two hours for about a half hour to an hour. And she goes to bed between 8-9:30 and sleeps well. So, just keep doin what your doin and I'm sure his scedual will set the way you want it to soon.
