When a job asks for three references and two letters of recommendation, can they be from the same people? Thanks.?

    Usually, no.

    References are people you know personally, who can vouch for you, as a character witness.

    Letters of recommendation are from former / current employers who tell the next employer that you would be a good employee.

    So, that would be three of your friends (a neighbor, a co-worker, and a classmate) who would be your reference (employers don't want family members as references because that would be subjetive), and, two of your former / current employers giving you the letter of recommendation. Thus, like Beverly S said, they are asking for five different things.
