If you are looking for a social hobby, and as a creative and game-loving individual, might I suggest tabletop gaming? I play Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 and Pathfinder and Call of Cthulhu (if you go D&D, I strongly recommend either 3.5 or Pathfinder versions; they're arguably the best). There are dozens of other tabletop gaming RPGs out there, too (Star Wars, Cyberpunk, White Wolf, just to name a few). You play in a group of actual, live human beings and work cooperatively to acquire loot, advance (level up) and customize your characters, and just have a good time playing. Basically played with paper & pen, books, and dice. It encourages creativity, storytelling, and teamwork, and is very social. I've been doing it since I was a teenager and will never stop!

You can try a local gaming store to find gamers who are looking for a new person to join their group. They might expect a "trial run" with you first, which is only natural since you would be a stranger. :)

UPDATE: In that case, you might try something like paintball or laser tag. Both can be really fun, social, and strategic, as well as a great workout. Laser tag, however, is more indoor. Another possibility is to look into your local SCA group - Society for Creative Anachronism, I believe it stands for. I have many gaming friends into it, and it involves medieval period costume, immersing yourself into the medieval world, and even medieval combat.
