Performance-enhancing drugs, some quite dangerous, are now a part of modern sports, and many sports heroes have been accused of using these substances. What should happen to an athlete caught using these substances?

they should be banned for life on their first failure, giving them a two or even four year suspension means they still have the benefits of using those drugs after their return to the sport. Now WADA is saving samples so they can be tested in the future when new tests may identify drugs that today can not be detected.
If we banned people on their first failure we might reduce the number of young people that cheat.

Well most of them are legal so nothing would happen to them. There are some severe enchancement drugs that are forbidden, but the legal ones seem to suffice most of our modern day athletes, sadly.
