Severe pain after surgery! Please help!?
My mother (34) is experiencing severe pain in her thumb and hand after wrist surgery. What could this be? Pain has gotten MUCH worse after the first couple days home. It has been 5 days home. The surgery was for a broken bone in the wrist. No pain was experienced before the operation. The pain she is feeling in the thumb and hand is severe pain and numbness. Should we take off the splint even though the doc said not to? Just to see if there is a problem.

It should be examined by a doctor.
Keeping it elevated above her heart will help if the problem is caused by swelling inside the splint/bandage. Numbness and severe pain this late after the surgery is definitely not expected. I would be concerned about a circulation problem or swelling pressing on a nerve. A doctor should look at it though. If you take the splint off you are going to need a doctor to put it back on correctly anyway. Might as well let him/her take it off too.
