Is my house suitable for a dog?

Out cockapoo died around this time yeast year and my mom and I feel like we are ready for a new dog. The difference between then and now is my two older brothers moved out. My parents have joint custody so I switch parents houses every Friday. The week I am at my moms I just have school and my mom is home the entire time (except for going to the bank or a store or something) and she only works 1 or 2 times a week (usually 16 hours) at the nursing home. But the week I'm at my DADS she works just about everyday except for weekends varying from 8 to 16 hours. My other older brother stops by often (maybe like 8 times a week for durations of and hour to overnight). Would this be suitable for a dog? I don't want to bring a dog into our home if it's not going to be happy.

Sixteen hours is FAR too long to leave any dog. Unless your mom can arrange for someone to come over at least once during those days to take the dog out, then do not get a dog.

This decision is really up to only your mom. She is the one who has to hurry home half the days she works in order to take care of a dog. She might prefer the freedom of being able to go out with co-workers or friends, or shopping, or just go home and crash instead of having to spend hours interacting with a dog that's been alone all day.

I suggest a better pet for this situation would be a cat. They don't have to be let outside or walked at all, and are much better at being left alone a lot. Go down to the Humane Society or a rescue and pick out an adult cat that is friendly--one that comes up to you and your mom and wants to sit on your laps.

Since your mother will be the major caregiver for the dog every other week, the decision should be hers. I don't think it's smart for you to have a dog, unless you can take it to your dad's when you live there.

First of all, did you do this with your other dog? Are you considering getting another cockapoo? Get an adult potty trained lap dog you can take around with you, so it won't get stressed being alone. Also, get a shelter dog, you could be saving a life.

It must be an adult dog you get, if you do get a dog. Puppies cannot be left alone for more than two hours. Do your parents want a dog?
