Why is my car insurance so high?

My car insurance is $250 a month. I'm a 20 year old male who drives a 2009 Toyota Corolla. I have had one speeding ticket when I was 16 years old. And I was going 60 in a 45. (Unknown area I thought I was on expressway, the roads looked like an expressway). Other than that I've never had a ticket and I'm a safe driver. Anyway to lower my bill?

First, that is not high for someone who is male and under 25. That price is very, very low for someone who is male and under 25 and could be a mistake.

Second, your insurance is that price because (1) you are male (2) you are 20, (3) you have had a speeding ticket, and (4) you live in a place where that is the price for a person who is male and 20 and has had a speeding ticket (or you live in a place where the price higher, but they made a mistake and charged you too little).

You can do these things to lower your insurance bill:

    1) You can move to a place where insurance costs less

    2) If you live in a place where insurance costs are based on physical gender, then you can get a sex change operation. If you live in a place where insurance costs are determined by genetic gender, then this idea won't work.

    3) You can stop driving, sell the car, cancel the insurance, and wait until you are 25 years old, so that you can get insurance cheaper.

well for starters younger drivers are statistically far more likely to crash their car, Men are more likely to crash than women. Just because you were 15 miles over the speed limit legally doesn't make a difference. You were still over the speed limit. you are young man who previously got a speeding ticket.there is a lot of risk for you to crash which is the last thing your insurance company want so they'll charge you bucket loads Incase you as it's likely they will need to pay out more compensation than the average crash.as you age and your speeding ticket becomes less revelent the cost will decrease yet for now, you could only insure a part or limit to your car so if you crash the company will pay for most of it not all of it. You should ask many different company's for a quote & premium and see which is cheapest. You could also only apply for third party insurance were only the third party in a accident is covered, it will save money only if you now have comphrensive cover.

Because you're 20 and male, for christ's sake.

Insurance companies base their premiums on risk levels, and risk levels are based on statistics. Statistics are the lord-thy-god to any insurance company. And all the statistics, year after year and decade after decade, say the same thing: Young males are more likely to crash than blind people are.

There is only one way to lower your insurance costs: Get older, don't crash into anything and don't rack up tickets. Unless you can invent and build a time machine, there are no other options. There isn't a magical secret insurance company out there who hasn't heard about young males and their reputation for crashing, so you'll just have to bite down and take the pain. Everyone else who was young and male once went through the same thing, and most of us survived.

A 16 year old driver is always a greater risk of getting into an accident than an adult. To offset the probability that you will get into an accident, insurance companies charge more for young drivers. Adding a speeding ticket in the mix will greatly increase the price. Best thing you can is compare insurance quotes twice a year.

Because you are a single male under age 25.

The way to get cheaper insurance is to get more insurance quotes.

You are a 20 year old male.

That group, 18-30 year oldmales, has the highest accident rate of all drivers. So YOU help pay for ALL the claims simply because YOU are at a higher risk of having an accident.

Because you are a 20 year old male who had a very significant moving violation in your first year of driving. Sure, your month rate might be a bit high but compared to what other 20 year old males are paying you are within the average rate.

Why did you not capitalize your own name? We all have questions. Since third grade kids are instructed that all proper names must be capitalized. This is a standard that in the age of the "smartphone" goes into the trash for "convenience." The more kids do this, the more it is repeated. No matter the gazillions times this happens, it is still an error. It is a lack of knowledge and discipline, of low intellectual fortitude, to repeat the errors of others for the sake of being 'the in the tribe. Since the rest of the statement is in excellent English, again, why did you not capitalize your name? Similarly, Mr. Louis, to cry, to beg, to mention, to converse with strangers, in person, online, via mail, carrier pigeon, short wave radio, letters, etc. as to any issue is basically a waste of time. In the USA there are fifty states and thousands of automobile insurance companies. Yes, there are more than the three the torture us with the same TV commercials, Internet commercials, newspapers, on blimps, etc. doing business. Each state of the union has standards, regulations, monitoring, etc. of insurance companies. Since you know where you live and you know the company and you know your driving record, the adult, the mature, the intelligent thing to do is to get quotes from as many auto insurance companies as you care to contact. You see, Mr. Louis, auto insurance contracts, known as policies, are custom made, tailored to the needs and wants of each client. There is no standard policy to be compared with others even with the same year, make and model of vehicle. How you use the car, how often you use the car, how far you use the car, where the car is parked each night, the theft rate, the repair costs, the hospital costs, the average cost of lawsuits, court costs, etc. are all thrown into the "pot" to come up with a risk factor. This is not personal, this not just based on age, or the citation or anything specific related to you. It is related to all those around you. Here is an extreme example. In my area, a sixteen year old boy, the day after he got a license, was driving under the influence of weed. It seems to be "cool" for children since the age of twelve, to smoke weed. As he drove his cell phone rang. He was on a two lane road and a car was approaching from the opposite direction. Since phones MUST be answered, no matter what, instantly, he veered into the opposite lane and hit the approaching car head on. The other vehicle was driven by a pregnant female who was not wearing a seat belt. She was killed. This goes on by the hundreds each day. Millions of crashes each year. Just three days ago, a mother and son were killed walking on a sidewalk due to a speeding driver losing control. In this photo two drivers collided at a controlled intersection because one elected not to follow the rules. All of these factors add up your and mine and everyone else car insurance. Since you can elect to shop insurance companies, since you can review the coverage for each section (for example, I have an "umbrella policy" for one million dollars that most people do not have that covers anything not specified in the other sections) and determine what you need or not. It is foolish not to have proper coverage. A lawsuit to recover damages can be devastating just on legal costs. The ultimate choice is yours but I have to mention on cultural aspect of this posting. To reach for the smartphone to ask is not smart. Your brain, after thinking of this issue, should have sent you to call your auto insurance agent or representative to ask the question you asked here with the auto policy in front of you. A review of each section could indicate too much coverage or coverage you may not need. If all is correct and all is needed and the $3,000 a year auto policy is not feasible, then the only logical choice is to sell the car and buy a bus pass or make other arrangements for transportation. Like I mentioned, shop around, ask for cost factors that can be adjusted, etc. But asking here? I hope you get the point. Good luck.

Your age and your ticket. To lower it, get older and don't get another ticket. If you owe no money on your car, you could get just liability insurance.
