what video card will SLI with the onboard graphics?

My friend has a Biostar A780L3C motherboard with an AMD Athlon II x 4 640 Quad Core CPU and 4 gig of DDR3 ram. This motherboard has 1 x PCI-E x16 2.0 Slot, 1 x PCI Slot, Integrated Video: ATI Radeon™ HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 1024 MB, Hyper Transport Technology up to 3.2G

I'm sure it has to be an AMD card, but I'm not sure if it needs to be one with HD3xxx. I know in the beginning it needed to be in the same series, but didn't that change?

This will be for multiple monitors not for gaming.

Dual NVidia graphics use SLI, the AMD counterpart is called Crossfire or CrossfireX for dual cards, or Hybrid Crossfire, Dual Graphics for on-board or APU based integrated graphics paired with a card. You're correct that the 780 chipset with the HD 3000 graphics can only be paired with an HD 3400 series card, but those cards are very old and performance-wise your friend would do considerably better using a stand alone modern card. Pretty much all modern cards have multi monitor support, so an inexpensive GT 720 or R7 240 with 2GB of vram would be a good choice.
