It is your responsibility to cancel your homeowner's insurance. You will probably need to do it in writing. Insurance companies generally don't cancel insurance without documentation that you wanted it cancelled. Once it's cancelled they will send you pro-rated refund. This has nothing to do with escrow.

As far as "unused escrow money" do you mean the escrow impound account that your current mortgage lender requires? The lender will return that to you usually in about 2-3 weeks. If you don't get it within three weeks you need to find out what's going on.

You may eventually get a small check from the closing agent as well. Sometimes a bit of money is held back at closing for things like making sure utility accounts are settled, etc. I'm pretty sure every time I've sold a house I got another little check (usually less than $200) about a month after closing. My memory may be wrong...

Speaking of which, you have notified all your utility providers, yes? :-)

After your lender has been paid off, they will refund any money left in your escrow account. Make sure to notify your insurance company that the house is sold and closed as of that date. I am still waiting for a refund check from Allstate for a house that sold last spring!

When you don't have a clue about closing on finances you shouldn't own a home. Stupid people are the reason the housing market dropped.
