Do retainers actually work?

Update:

I know the idea is to stop the teeth moving, but I'm not convinced. My sister wore a retainer for years after having braces, and her teeth still moved and have become crooked again. My mother never wore a retainer after having braces as a child and her teeth have never moved. It seems like the retainer makes no difference at all. I'm thinking about having a brace as an adult as my front teeth cross, but am not keen on having to sleep with a retainer for years to come!

Yes, yes and YES! It it is super important that you wear it at all times until its time to eat. Some retainers are different based on your brackets or the condition of your braces. I had a retainer and i took it for granted. Every time you dont wear it, your teeth start to shift back to the way they were. So now just my bottom teeth are a little crooked. I regret not wearing it at all times. hope this helped!

Yes of course they work other wise they won't tell you to wear them your sister might not have wore them enough you should definitely wear them when you get your braces.
