"like iPhone 4 but don't know if I need to upgrade."
That's probably a good sign that you don't need an upgrade.
The age of the iPhone 4 means you'd lag for a couple of reasons, mostly because you don't get LTE connectivity and you don't have iOS 8. But if your phone otherwise works, then that's probably a good sign that you can keep it going longer.

Obviously it will stop working at some point. You can always get a new phone then.
You don't have to get another iPhone simply because your current phone is one. You'd need the iPhone if you want to keep certain apps that don;t come in windows or android versions. if you've spent any money on iOS apps, then going to a new OS isn't a great idea. I enjoy my iPhone 5S but it's far from certain that any replacement will be another iPhone.

I recommend getting an Iphone 5 or 6 considering the fact that the iphone 4 cannot get the ios 8 update. If you like ios 7 , then you don't have to worry about upgrading. If you want to get something up to date though, i recommend upgrading. Keep in mind that new apps that come out may only support ios 8 and no lower than that and that's why i recommend it.

The only thing you have to consider is the software update. iPhone 4 cannot update to iOS 8xx. I too have an iPhone 4 and it is working perfectly, though I constantly get app updates. I think if I continue to update in another 2 years, my phone will not be able to have sufficient space for these app updates up to the release of iPhone 7, though I could be wrong about that one. Maybe it will reach the stage where a message pops up to say it is not compatible.
But if you do not see a need change phone, don't. Otherwise, my recommendation like everyone else is an iPhone 5S.

I had the iPhone 4s and I decided to switch to a different model because my iPhone was running too slow and updates would take forever plus I wasn't paying all that money for a upgraded iPhone, I actually prefure the phone I have now to my iPhone.

It all depends wether you can afford the latest iphone or not.the iphone 4 is still good.if it works, and does everything you do,then keep it.
If it breaks and you take it to repair or apple,
They will tell you its an obselete phone.
If you really need a phone upgrade
Get an iphone 5s
But if you have the money to get the iphone 6
Get it
Its a good phone
And I guarantee you that you can keep using that phone for years and years
Its fast and stable

If the 4 goes out of service I am sure your carrier will tell you about it. If you would like to upgrade and have an available upgrade, I would go ahead and do it. While every iPhone is essentially the same, I would say why not! It can only get better, right?

If your not 100% sure you want to upgrade keep your iphone 4 then get an iphone 5 s/c in the future.

The iPhone 4 will still be able to get service, but eventually it won't be able to get app updates as it cannot update to iOS 8. So you won't be able to get new apps or anything.
If you were looking for a new iPhone, I would get the most current version, which is the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. The difference is the 6 has a 4.7" screen and the 6+ has a 5.5" screen.

get an iPhone 5S cause its the best
perfect screen size
easy fit in your pocket
i6 is too over-priced and not worth its features
