'how can I connect a Samsung smart TV to a Denon 1801 receiver?'?
I tried going from the audio out optical port on the TV to the optical in on the receiver. Then I tried switching on the TV from the TV speaker to the othersetting. I tried various settings on the receiver, but I don't hear anything.

Make sure the input is on optical and not on coax. Select the input and go to the setup button and scroll to find the cable for your input. It is probably on coax digital as default. My Denon is around the same era as yours and it was like that. I did all the adjustments through the remote. The avr should be on auto too to detect if DD or DTS is active.

You are doing it correctly.
There are 2 types of optical signals. PCM (Stereo) and Bitstream/DD5.1/etc. Make sure to select the 5.1 version, then make sure you have plugged into the "DVD" input on your receiver. You may have to tell it to expect a 5.1 signal.

You connect the receiver to the tv using HDMI cable. Connect the Sky box using HDMI cable directly to the tv. Connect the Blu Ray disc player to the receiver using HDMI cable. Connect an optical audio cable from the tv to the receiver. When you want to hear the sound from the tv through the receiver, you have to select the source input that you connected the optical audio cable from the tv to the receiver. Your tv and receiver owners manual will also provide the proper instruction for the connection. Hope this will help you out.
