What is the connection between seeing the future and communicating with the dead?

I see a bunch of psychics whose primary deal is to be the medium of communication between the dead and their surviving loved ones, who have a secondary ability in prophesy, and publish, among other things, annual world predictions for the coming year. And they'll also do personal prediction services.

So is there any explanation given in psychic circles for the apparent interconnection of these two, to my mind, entirely distinct abilities? What mechanism allows for a gift in both these areas, and why do we (or I, at least) hardly ever see psychics who profess to only being able to do one thing?

There is, of course, a fairly obvious sceptical answer to these questions, and - cards on the table - I am a sceptic, so I've thought this already. So if you're thinking of answering "they're expanding their market for more delicious money" then you'd be kind of wasting your time. But I am genuinely interested in and curious to see what psychics or those who believe being a psychic is a thing have to say about it.

Update:

Honestly I expected Yahoo to have a psychic section, but this looks like the right place. Feel free to suggest alternatives though.

Update 2:

These answers are all nice and all, but if you'd care to read the question you'd see that you're preaching to the choir and I'd much rather hear from believers. Thanks all the same.

I would think that those with the ability to see and contact spirits, would also have a go at learning tarot, and the cards have historically always been used to determine current and future events.

So we have a natural ability, coupled with a learned ability.

I am also sceptical of people who charge for services, as there can be days or people when you get nothing at all, and in this case there is a very real possibility that they will just make it up and take the cash anyway.

But is no different really to visiting a doctor, they prod and talk to you, then decide you need this exact medicine, but they may be completely wrong and the medicine doesn't work, but you keep buying it anyway because they told you to.

So there are good and bad in all professions.

You're certainly right about YA. It's overrun by skeptics now and those sad OCPD types are compelled to "prove themselves right" over & over & over. And saying you don't want their input is a Welcome mat for confrontation that they simply cannot ignore! They're a "sounding board audience" that only hears itself clapping... they don't even notice the music.

So I'm glad you liked Air's response, but just how did that answer your question? I can't say "I disagree," because it didn't explain anything. I feel it's typical of the New Age sophistry that's prattled off whenever advocates want to sound knowledgeable or wise. And imho, if you can't answer in plainspoken terms, resorting to drivel like that denigrates the entire field of parapsychology.

In truth, there is no answer to your question. *Every medium is psychic, but not all psychics are mediums.* Just as we don't know how or why precognition works, tossing mediumship into the mix confuses matters even more. Connecting with souls of the dead is certainly a type of telepathic communication and therefore, it is a function of ESP. But it seems you consider "regular" ESP and mediumship as two distinctly separate skills. They're NOT, actually.

Let me use an analogy which might help... Imagine that the various forms of ESP are different stations on a radio. Turn the dial one way to find precognitive dreaming, readjust the knob again to locate the frequency for psychometry or your remote viewing ability. So if you knew where it was on the dial, if you learned what frequency accessed which skill, you could tune into that spot and use that particular ability.

Mediumship and afterlife communication is no different from what we consider the common forms of ESP like clairvoyance or precognitive flashes. It's information which is already out there, (in a sense, like radio waves) and is accessible to anyone who's able to tune into those signals. Though we're born with the propensity, it still requires training & hard work to shape that raw talent into a useable, functional skill. That's a simplistic expression of a highly complex process, but hopefully it gives you the general idea.
