How to remove Yahoo search from Firefox (latest version) permanently?

I know about changing the search settings and deselecting Yahoo and choosing to make Google the default search engine, but every time i restart Firefox or log on to my computer after shutting it down, it goes back to making Yahoo the default. It's very frustrating because I absolutely loathe the Yahoo search engine.

Yeah, the same thing was happening to me. Here's what I did:

    (1) In the location bar, type "about:config"

    (2) In the filter box, type "browser.search"

    (3) Double-click the "browser.search.ShowOneOffButtons" to change it's value to false.

Doing this reverts the search interface to the way it was in Firefox 33. Now, in the search box, you can click on "Manage search engines", actually remove Yahoo and set Google as your default and it will stick.

At that point, you can revert "browser.search.ShowOneOffButtons" back to true if you like the new search interface, or just leave it false if you prefer the old interface. Google will remain as the default either way.

By the way, if you look at the other options in step (2) above, you'll notice that Yahoo is set as the default for .US searching (there are specific settings for US searching). If you want, you can alternatively/also change those US about:config settings to Google as #1.

EDIT: I just discovered why my search engine was reverting back to Yahoo after every search. I had an add-on (Searchbar Autosizer) with a setting that reverted to the default search engine after a query was submitted. It was a nice feature to have that worked well in previous versions, but seems to mess up the user-selected default in Firefox 34. You may want to see if you have an add-on that may be doing something similar.
